What Are SWMS?
According to Safe Work Australia, an SWMS is a document that sets out the high-risk, construction work activities that are carried out in your workplace, the hazards associated with the high-risk work, and any activities and measures you have put in place to control the risks.
If you’re doing multiple high-risk work activities, you can use one SWMS.
Safe Work Australia classifies a SWMS as an administrative control. It’s used in conjunction with other controls such as high-risk work licenses, and workplace procedures.
How Do SWMS Work?
SWMS are different from other administrative controls, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). SWMS are used to support the other administrative controls and are different from Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) or SOPs.
When you create an SWMS, it isn’t intended to be a procedure.
An SWMS is used as a tool to help employees and supervises confirm that control measures are in place and monitor the effectiveness of control measures for any high-risk work activities that are being undertaken.
Why Should You Be Using SWMS?
Under WHS regulations, as an employer or PCBU, you must be implementing SWMS for any high-risk work activities. It’s part of your obligation to the safety of employees, visitors, and the public when you’re undertaking any high-risk work.
