Asbestos has been banned in all products in Australia since 2003, but before that, it was widely used throughout the building industry
When in a solid form, asbestos is low risk, but when it’s cracked, smashed, damaged, or disturbed, asbestos fibres inhaled into your body can pose a severe and sometimes fatal health risk.
Although asbestos was banned entirely in 2003, and they stopped installing asbestos in homes and buildings in the 1980s, it is still present in many old buildings around Australia, particularly buildings built between 1920 and 1950.
Whenever you are working on any old buildings in these date ranges, you need to be asbestos aware. If you ever run into anything which could be asbestos, you need to treat it as if it were asbestos until you have identified it to the contrary.
